The Dubai Duty Free Group, which incorporates the airport retail operation and its leisure division, has announced a turnover of Dh7.057 billion ($1.933bn) for 2015. The figure includes Dubai Duty Free sales, which reached Dh6.892bn ($1.888bn) for the year.

Dubai Duty Free (DDF), which operates at both Dubai International Airport and Al Maktoum International recorded its highest sales for the year in December 2015 when figures reached Dh721.87 million ($197.77m).

Category-wise, perfumes continued to be the highest selling category with annual sales topping Dh1.137bn ($311.58m), which represents 16.5 per cent of total annual sales, DDF said in a media statement.

Liquor and cigarettes followed, with sales of Dh1.069bn ($293m) and Dh589.67m ($161.55m), respectively.

Confectionery came in fourth place with sales amounting to Dh556.14m ($152.37m) followed by gold with Dh549.32m ($150.5m).

Departure sales, which account for 87 per cent of the total annual sales reached Dh5.989bn ($1.64bn), while arrivals sales showed a 6 per cent increase over last year and accounted for 11 per cent of the total annual sales. Moreover, Terminal 2 recorded an 18 per cent increase in sales over last year to reach Dh639.52m ($175.21m).

"There is a lot to look forward to in 2016, including the opening of Concourse D at Dubai International, which is a fantastic facility that will be very well received. We have a 7,000 sq metres retail operation in Concourse D and will be introducing some new brands and concepts there," said Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of the group.

DDF noted that its December sales were fuelled by Dubai Duty Free's 32nd anniversary celebrations when the operation offered a 25 per cent discount across a wide range of merchandise from December 18-20 and recorded Dh100.20m ($27.22m) on the anniversary day itself (December 20). Over the three days, the DDF cash registers recorded a total of 402,000 sales transactions with nearly 207,000 sales transactions on December 20 alone.

Dubai Duty Free recorded more than 26.8m sales transactions in 2015, which is an average of 73,558 sales transactions per day across both Dubai International and at Al Maktoum International.
