UAE auto plant opens tomorrow

Ashok Leyland, one of India's leading truck manufacturer, will inaugurate vehicle assembly plant in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) on Thursday (tomorrow).

The plant, first automobile manufacturing unit in the UAE, is a joint venture between the Indian firm and Ras Al Khaimah Investment Authority (Rakia) and will be inaugurated by UAE's Supreme Council Member and the Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah High Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi.

The opening ceremony will also be attended by Srichand Hinduja, Chairman of Hinduja Group, the parent company of Ashok Leyland.

Ashok Leyland and Rakia signed an MoU in 2006 to set up the assembly unit, which eventually be upgraded to a vehicle assembly plant (for trucks and buses) in the second phase.

The plant involves $50 million investment in phased manner with annual capacity to of 1,000 buses. It will start operations as a busy body assembly using Ashok Leyland chassis and bus body CKD kits imported from India.

The company will first launch AVIA range of trucks.
