Al Futtaim Motors, authorised distributor of Toyota cars in the UAE is recalling 3,217 Toyotas of various 2013 models in the UAE market due a defect in the engine, Emarat Al Youm has reported.

Managing Director of Al Futtaim Motors, John Williams, told Emarat Al Youm that the engines in the cars mentioned contain valve springs where there is a defect in manufacturing.

He added that such a defect can lead to corrosion of the surface which can over time lead to the occurrence of cracks and engine failure.

A malfunction may occur and the engine can stop working while the vehicle is being driven, he was quoted as saying.

He explained that the company will recall 1,541 Prados among all being recalled.

He added that Al Futtaim has contacted Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan to coordinate the UAE recall.

Al Futtaim Motors can be contacted at service centres from Saturday to Thursday, 8am to 7pm.

The UAE Ministry of Economy said reiterated that recalls and withdrawals from the market in general are obligatory according to the Consumer Protection Act, which also states that the company must advertise in local newspapers in Arabic and English at least twice in such cases.

According to Reuters, Toyota Motor Corp last week said it was recalling 33,000 cars, pickup trucks and commercial vehicles worldwide to replace a defective part that may cause engine failure.
