Dubai Municipality has begun on an ambitious market overhaul project in the emirate to better serve its residents. While it plans to open a new market in Al Rashidiya, several new shops are planned in Hamriyah and some existing markets will be shifted to Warsan area.

It has begun work on developing Hamriyah Central Market, according to a top official.

Obaid Ibrahim Al Marzouqi, Head, Markets Department, Dubai Municipality, said the work comprises constructing eight new shops apart from installing air-conditioners across the entire market.

The total project cost is estimated to be about Dh10 million and is scheduled for completion by mid-2012.

The development is part of Dubai Municipality's vision for mordernising the emirate's markets keeping in mind the increasing urban population.

Hamriyah market was established in 1980 on 56,246 square metres of land. It currently includes 73 shops, which will be increased to 81 by mid-next year.

The municipality is also planning to move several markets to Warsan area, close to Al Aweer market. Potato trading business will be located in Warsan shortly. A  merket for equipment and spare parts will be built in the area. Similarly, used furniture market will be shifted from Deira to Warsan.

Meanwhile, Naif Souq will be transferred from Deira to Bur Dubai.

Dubai Municipality is also planning a market in Al Rashidiya, apart from encouraging walk-through outlets such as KFC and Pizza chains to operate in the area.

Al Marzouqi said: “The aim of developing markets in the emirate is to better serve residents and give alternatives to consumers. He confirmed that the municipality in not competing with the private sector, instead is seeking to moderate functioning of markets."
