An SMS alert about surprise cash deposits were sent to many customers of Citibank this morning.

“An amount of USD 3366.08 from account noxxxxx is transferred to Mr Exxxx Rxxxx.

Ref no 20xxxxxxGxxx,” read the SMS, which was forwarded to Emirates24l7 by a reader.

Surprised customers, who dialled the bank’s call centre to enquire about the strange deposits, were told that it was a technical snag.

The bank confirmed that it was due to the technical glitch.

"We confirm that we’ve had yesterday night  a system upgrade which is part of our continuous investment in latest technological capabilities. Unfortunately, the system experienced a technical bug which caused SMS messages on historical transactions to be erroneously sent to a few clients. We have since fixed this minor glitch, and we have already sent an apology SMS to the respective clients," the bank said in a statement to Emirates 24l7.

“The minute I told them about the SMS, the agent informed me that it was technical fault,”said the reader. “He told me that they had received many such calls since morning.”

When Emirates24l7 called the bank, a line manager at their call centre confirmed that they were dealing with many complaints regarding bogus deposits.

“Since morning we have received many calls about it,” he said.

The agent, however, was unable to reveal the exact number of SMSes that were sent out, or the total amount tallied through the alerts.

“All I can say is that it was a technical error. We still don’t know what triggered it but the technical support guys are investigating it now,” he said.
