Thirty-one certified green projects under the jurisdiction of Trakhees-EHS, the regulatory arm of the Ports, Customs & Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), are expected to show annual energy savings of 22 million Kwh and annual water savings 15 million gallons.

Although the saving could be more than what is stated above, ensuring that these projects perform as planned and remain “operationally sustainable” is one of the major challenges.

“The greatest challenge is to ensure that these projects perform as planned. Trakhees- EHS, as a path-breaking initiative, also necessitates that all Green Certified Buildings need to ensure that their developments/buildings are “operationally sustainable” and meet the objectives for which they were designed/ established,” Trakhees said in a statement.

It further revealed that several projects are active in the pipeline and have successfully completed the regulatory reviews.

“By virtue of the certification these projects are deemed to have incorporated sound green principles in design and construction,” Trakhees said.

Out of the 31 buildings, 26 are industrial project, two each are hotels and residential and one is commercial.

On the Green Building Regulatory front, while retaining the LEED aligned rating system at the generic level, Trakhees-EHS has rolled out its own regulation for villas and low-rise residential developments followed by another for warehouses and industrial developments.

As a recent addition to its portfolio of regulatory services in the arena of sustainability of built environment, the authority launched its “in house certification” programme for the green building projects.

The service grants the clients an option to seek EHS certification in lieu of certification from other bodies.
