Speech jammer

Tired of listening to a boring talk, a lecture or a colleague rattling in the office? The Japanese have found an answer to your woes. You can now silence the talk with a speech jamming gun.

The device developed by Kazutaka Kurihara at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology and Koji Tsukada at Ochanomizu University can silence any person talking from about 100 feet distance.

When used the gun, an inbuilt microphone picks up the words being said and then plays it back 0.2 seconds later. According to an explanation provided by the two inventors, the human brain interprets this echo effect as silence.

The device was originally intended for use in places where it is mandatory to maintain silence such as a library. According to reports the device will have no adverse effect on human beings.

The device includes a direction-sensitive microphone and a direction-sensitive speaker, a motherboard, a distance sensor and some relatively straightforward code.

Forget about focus just shoot

The new Lytro camera allows users to take shots of a brightly lit area without the use having to bother about adjusting the focus.

As the product description says unlike a conventional camera that captures a single plane of light, the Lytro camera captures the entire light field, which is all the light traveling in every direction in every point in space.

Next, the camera's software compiles what's basically a 3D map of the captured image. Once you post the photo, anyone with the URL can refocus the image by clicking on a new area of focus.
