New challenge for iPhone 6: Galaxy S4 sales top 20m in 60 days; 60m by year-end

Sales of South Korean smartphone maker Samsung’s hottest selling Galaxy S4 seem to be defying gravity, soaring to dizzying heights within two months of the device’s launch.

JK Shin, the charismatic co-CEO of Samsung Electronics and head of the Samsung Mobile Communications, reportedly told mediapersons that sales (supply-side) of the Samsung spearhead had crossed the 20-million-mark in just two months.

This news follows last month’s announcement by Samsung that the hot new device had generated sales figures of 10 million in just 27 days after its launch. Read: Samsung is selling 200 Galaxy S4 smartphones EVERY MINUTE.

Now, it seems the record run for the Korean mobile handsets manufacturer continues, and according to J.J. Park, an analyst with investment bank JP Morgan (no less), the handset is on track to clock sales numbers of 60m by the end of 2013.

While that is indeed a huge number, it would seem to suggest a small slowdown in sales of the Galaxy S4 in the next six months or so. That’s perhaps because sales numbers are supposed to organically slow down after the initial rush.

Nevertheless, Samsung Galaxy S4 has already become the hottest selling Android device ever. Galaxy S4, the flagship Android-based smartphone from Samsung, was made available for purchase in late April and had managed to reach 20 million sold units before the end of June.

And while the new Samsung stallion seems to be facing little competition from a slew of other smartphones launched this year, including the BlackBerry Z10, the HTC One, the Sony Xperia Z, etc., the fact that the next iteration of iPhone from arch-rival Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is not expected to hit stores before the fourth quarter of this year means that Samsung has a free season pass to record sales until at least October 2013.

And that too if the next iPhone meets and exceeds customer expectations.
