RTA, Siemens sign MoU on development of 3D printing technology

The Roads and Transport Authority, RTA, in Dubai has reiterated its endeavour and commitment to harness the world’s most sophisticated technologies, to be utilised in its diverse operations to support the delivery of its services to the various social segments of the public.

The RTA and Siemens have therefore recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, at the RTA’s headquarters in Dubai. The MoU is an additional step that will practically enhance the RTA’s current 3D printing initiative. It will also seek to expand the sources of spare parts for the Dubai Metro and increase their availability, reduce the level of obsolete equipment and facilitate the supply of improved parts with better performance and greater features.

Abdul Mohsin Ibrahim Younes, CEO of the Rail Agency, signed the MoU for the RTA, and Alexander Biron von Curland, Senior Executive and Vice President, Mobility, Siemens Middle East, signed for Siemens. Several of the RTA’s directors and managers and employees from various departments of the RTA’s Rail Agency also attended the signing of MoU.

"This step would certainly consolidate the RTA’s constant efforts to support Dubai’s endeavours in becoming the world’s smartest city in three years, which would definitely make the residents of Dubai, its visitors and tourists happier and more satisfied," Younes said.

"Joining forces with a prestigious international company such as Siemens would certainly empower the RTA to realise its technological targets and innovation objectives, as per the timeline scheduled for the evolvement of 3D printing technology in the maintenance operations of the Rail Agency," Younes added.

Regarding the MoU, von Curland said, "We are proud to be working with the RTA to advance industrialised 3D printing in Dubai, in line with the emirate’s vision to be the world’s smartest city. Siemens has been a worldwide pioneer of 3D printing, and this digital technology is changing the way we design and manufacture spare parts for mobility systems, such as metros."

During the second half of 2016, the RTA’s Rail Agency has utilised 3D printing technology on the Dubai Metro, and a team from the Rail Agency Maintenance Department succeeded in printing spare parts for the metro’s sub-systems.
