Saudi Arabia’s municipality has launched a total 7,929 projects over the past seven years but 465 of them have been stalled and more than 1,000 projects have been delayed, the municipality said in a statement.

The stalled projects account for 13 per cent of the total projects in infrastructure and other sectors undertaken by the municipality in the past seven years, said the statement, carried by the Saudi Arabic language daily Al Eqtisadiah.

The report showed 4,476 projects have been completed while 3,453 of them are under construction, including 1,694 projects to be completed on schedule.

“Projects that behind their schedule totaled 1,294 while there are 465 stalled projects, accounting for 13 per cent of the total projects under construction,” it said.

The report cited several re asons for the delayed and faltering projects, including lack of qualified technical departments at municipalities in Saudi Arabia, negligence by some contractors, and long procedures for re-tendering stalled projects.

“Other reasons are that some contracting firms awarded contracts are not qualified and the fact that some projects were stopped by lack of services and land disputes.”
