FB, Instagram down: Click to check if it's up

Update: Facebook and Instagram are now both back online after about an hour's outage worldwide.

The cyber-hacking group @LizardSqaud seemed to take responsibility for the outage as it tweeted: "Facebook, Instagram, Tinder, AIM, Hipchat #offline #LizardSquad".

It further suggested that it may have left Twitter because it uses the microblogging site for communication. "If only we didn't use twitter to communicate...," it tweeted.

For those having trouble accessing Facebook, here’s some good news – it isn’t just you or your browser: it appears Facebook is down across the world.

Users on Twitter are reporting problems getting onto Facebook this morning, and the site DownDetector.com has seen thousands of users report the issue since 10.10am UAE time.

Within minutes of the outage, the hashtag #facebookdown became the top trending one on Twitter.

At the same time, Facebook-owned Instagram, the image-sharing social media portal, too was being reported down, with some users speculating that perhaps both were hosted on the same servers.

Instagram acknowledged the outage in a Tweet from their @instagram account, saying “We’re aware iof an outage affecting Instagram and are working on a fix. Thank you for your patience.”

In addition, users took to Twiter to voice their tongue-in-cheek response to the global outage:

“OMG! Facebook is down and I can't post on Facebook to tell everyone!!” tweeted ‏@drnicomartini.

“And now Facebook is down too! What will become of me?! Lol #facebookdown #instagramdown” tweeted ‏@FaviCakes.

“Anyone else go to Twitter to check to see if Facebook is down? #Facebookdown”, said ‏@EDMManiac.

“Retweet if Facebook is down for you too #facebookdown #Facebook,” tweeted ‏@NAGsTV.

The outage appeared to have affected both Facebook’s website and its apps for mobile and tablet devices.
