Google revamps Hangouts to take on WhatsApp: New caller ID
Google has revamped its messenger service –Hangouts - making it more mobile friendly with a totally new look and feel.
The Hangouts 4.0 for Android has been updated with material design and according to Google offers a fresh new look, improved speed, and added features.
“We’ve been hard at work on big improvements to make Hangouts faster, simpler, and easier on the eyes,” it said announcing the new changes.
Hangouts has been struggling to gain popularity unlike other similar platforms such as the widely popular WhatsApp, WeChat and Viber.
The messenger app, which was carved out of Google Plus, has features such as text messenger, voice call and video call.
Hangouts, however, has no feature to let you know who is currently online.
Among the new changes is a feature where users can make calls to any landline or mobile number from the Hangouts Dialer, now with Outbound Caller ID.
Users can also receive and reply to group MMS messages in Hangouts using Google Voice.
Google has also enabled easy use of Hangouts on Android Wear. (Just say, “Ok Google, send a Hangouts message,” into your watch).
While users in the UAE have so far only received a 3.3 version update. Google says it has already started rolling out the updated version and it will soon be available in the Play Store.
UAE is one of the 23 countries including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Thailand where the service is not yet enabled.
