Asus: Ice-cream sandwich smartphone

Taiwanese electronics company Asus has launched its PadFone – a 4.0 smartphone which converts into a tablet, which then converts into a mini laptop.

Yes you heard it right. A three in one smart-phone that works as an ‘ice-cream sandwich’ simply doubles up to whatever you want it to be.

The 4.3” screen phone has to be connected to a docking styled device called Padfone station for it to convert into a 10.1”tablet.

Club it with the Asus keyboard dock and the device transforms itself into a Netbook.

That’s not all. The stylus too does multiple tasks – acts as a headphone and microphone – while connecting through Bluetooth.

The PadFone has a Super AMOLED qHD touchscreen, dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, 8MPixel digital camera with Fuji image processor, ASUS SonicMaster audio, GPS, 16GB storage onboard, microSD slot and 1520mAh battery.

According to the company, the integration between the phone and docking station is seamless and the moment the device is connected to the station it transforms the viewing experience into a tablet mode.

While the phone itself has a 62 hour talk-time, the Station Dock keyboard comes with an additional battery that can
recharge the PadFone for up to 102 hours of talk time.

The PadFone is priced at $917 while the keyboard costs an additional $195.

The project is listed under Kickstarter and already has about 611 backers who have pledged $72,683.

Hot Gadgets: Nokia, HTC go for iPhone kill

Two smartphones that were launched last week are creating headlines - The Nokia Lumia 900 and HTC Titan II.

Nokia Lumia 900

The Nokia is an improvement of Lumia 800 with a much larger screen (4.3-inch AMOLED ClearBlack display) and 4G LTE technology (the first from Nokia).It also comes equipped with a 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens apart from a 1-megapixel front-facing camera.

The Nokia Drive offers a fully features personal navigation system and the phone allws users to access the Microsoft SkyDrive for cloud storage. With a 1.4 GHz Scorpion processor and 512MB of RAM the phone has 16GB of internal storage.

In comparison the Windows based HTC Titan II is a 5.2 inch instrument with a 4.7-inch display (the highest for a windows phone so far). The 16 megapixel back camera has a dedicated camera button and image stabilization apart from a back illuminated light sensor. It also has a front facing 1.3 megapixel camera.

The phone operates on 7.5 mango operating and offers 4G LTE connectivity. The other features include 1.5 GHz Scorpion single core central processor; Snapdragon S2 microchip package; 512 MB RAM and 16 GB of built-in storage.

HTC Titan II

Nikon has come out with its latest new pro level D4 - the 16.2 megapixel camera with CMOS FX format image sensor and Expeed 3 image processing engine and ISO ranging from 100-12,800. The camera can shoot up to 11 frames per second at full-resolution and also includes silent mode.

The camera also has an advance scene recognition system with 91K pixel RGB sensor allowing accurate autofocus, auto exposure, i-TTL flash, Active D-Lighting and auto white balance result.

The camera can record 1080p Full HD video in three different modes - FX-based, DX-based or 1,920 x 1,080 crop movie format.

The two card slots can accommodate a CF card and an XQD memory card. It operates with Lithium-ion battery EN-EL18 with a battery life of 2,600 shots per charge.


Samsung Smart TV

Last week Samsung launched its ES8000 series Smart TV in the Gulf in an impressive launch at the Dubai Mall.

Some of the impressive features of the Dh12,999 feature rich TV is its dual-core processor and its multi tasking ability and voice and gesture recognition application. The Samsung’s Smart Interaction technology will enable users to control the TV via motion or voice control. The face recognition software will recognize the face of different family members and choose personalized apps.

The TV has full HD resolution and comes fitted with an integrated camera making it easy for skype users and gamers using the kinect technology.

Sony Smartwatch

Sony has launched an iPod Nano lookalike smartwatch that can access your apps from an android device. The device can also stream information from Android smartphones via Bluetooth.

The watch has a 1.3-inch OLED touch screen and is 0.3 inches thick and weighs about a half ounce. It technically works like a remote for your android device that is versions 2.1 and above and operates through Bluetooth 3.0.

Apart from displaying messages, answering calls, and alerting on all updates on the phone, it also displays time. It can be recharges using a USB cable and has a battery life of up to four days.
