No iPhone 6, Plus at Gitex Shopper: Stocks run-out

Latest: Forget Gitex Shopper, you may not be able to find the iPhone 6 or the iPhone 6 Plus in any retail stores across the UAE. Apple’s new phones have gone out of stock in almost all retail stores across the country.

Major retailers including, Jumbo, Sharaf DG and Emax are all out of stocks.

Currently, only Plugins appears to have a few available– at least as of 3.30 pm.

“We have a  few units of the gold coloured iPhone 6 units,” said a staffer at a Plugins store in Deira.

Neelesh Bhatnagar, CEO of Emax Electronics said: “We launched the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus across six stores in Dubai and Sharjah and the we can confirm the stocks sold out in two hours. We are waiting for fresh stock to come in.”

Quizzed on the Apple iPhone 6 not being retailed at the Shopper as yet, Bhatnagar said: “I don’t think it’s the company that has blocked the retail of the phones here, but rather the limited supply that is making it difficult for people to bring it here.”

Jacky’s Electronics, AVP, Mahesh Chotrani, however, also confirmed that stocks of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have run out across their stores on Saturday afternoon.

He said: “We are expecting supplies to be available across our stores in the coming days and we are currently in talks with Apple for the same, along with working towards bringing stocks to the Gitex Shopper.”

Nadeem Khanzadah, Head of Retail, Jumbo Electronics said it was the iPhone 6 Plus that ran out much faster than the 4.7 inch iPhone 6. “That’s because there were fewer iPhone 6 Plus units,” he said. According to him, fresh stocks will be available on Monday. It all depends on the distributors,” he added.

When asked if the devices would be sold at the Gitex Shopper he said, “It all depends on the availability. If we have sufficient numbers, we will surely bring it to the Shopper,” he said.

Retailers are also reluctant to to offer any discounts or bundles with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

A senior official at Jumbo said they have not heard of any ban from Apple from selling the new device the Shopper.

“The only reason it is not available here is non-availability of stocks. The stocks are running out faster than expected,” the official said. “We are trying to bring in the devices to the Shopper. It will be here as soon as fresh stocks arrive,” he said.

Apple ban?

There will be no iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus on sale at the Gitex Shopper  in World Trade Centre, leaving several visitors disappointed.

According to retailers the decision was communicated to them by Apple itself.  However, the devices will still be available for sale at retail outlets outside the World Trade Centre. But do not expect any major promotions on the Apple devices.

“We were planning to bring in the new iPhones to the shopper but had to cancel the plan following the request,” said one trader on condition of anonymity.

Apple launched the new iPhones for the first time in the UAE ahead of its usual schedule (two to three months after the international launch). The devices went on sale at midnight yesterday across the UAE.

Retailers, however, said it will not steal the thunder out of the Shopper in any ways.

“Apple being Apple usually positions its products at a premium and does not want to get involved in major promo sales. This could be one reason while the other being non-availability of stocks, but that does not make sense as stores that have it still sell it at retail stores out of the Gitex Venue,” said one retailer who do not want to be named.

Mahesh Chotrani, of Jackys told Emirates 24|7 that the only reason this was decided was because stocks are very limited. “Consumers still can buy it from retail stores,” he said.

The decision he said would not in any way affect the ongoing show at Gitex Shopper.
