Top five smartphones as we enter the New Year

The Consumer Electronics Show at Las Vegas is emerging as a strong contender as the destination for new smartphone launches. Traditionally it has been the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that attracts some major announcements.

Though no major announcements of flagship devices were made by major players, CES 2015 still saw several new devices being launched.

This year alone the show saw more than a dozen new smartphone launches from Samsung, LG, Lenovo, Asus including several new entrants.

Here we list five new announcements.

LG G Flex 2

LG took to curves again and took it a bit further with the G Flex 2 - the successor of last year’s G Flex.

The two most important changes in this year’s model is its reduced screen size - from a 6-inch device (G Flex) to a 5.5-inche and increased resolution – from 720p panel to a 1080p Full HD display.

The new model also has an upgraded Snapdragon 810 processor with a 64-bit chipset. 2GB of RAM but increased to DDR4, 13MP rear camera, with optical image stabilization, laser autofocus and dual LED flash. The 3,000 mAh flexible battery comes with a fast charge option and can charge up to 50 per cent in just 40 minutes.

Lenovo A6000, Vibe X2 Pro

Unlike LG, the Lenovo A6000 is for the budget conscious.  The dual SIM smartphone is 4G compatible and has a 5-inch screen and is powered by 1.2GHz 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor. The device comes with 1GB of Ram and 8GB internal storage and a 2300 mAh battery. The device has a 8MP rear camera. Lenovo also launched the Vibe X2 Pro which got more attention thanks to its selfie flash accessory.

The Vibe X2 Pro has a 5.3-inch, 1080p HD display, 64 bit Qualcomm Snapdragon Octa-Core processor and a 13MP camera on the front and back.

Kodak IM5

Smartphone these days are more about taking pictures than making calls. So it’s a no surprise that Kodak has entered the smartphone segment with its own camera fitted with an Android device.

The 5-inch device will be powered by a 1.7-GHz octa-core processor, has a 720p display, a 13 MP camera at the back, a 5 MP front camera, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of built-in storage with a microSD card slot.

Polaroid Selfie

Like Kodak this is another example of a camera firm entering the smartphone arena. The Polaroid Selfie is a smartphone with a rotating camera – just like what Oppo has on its devices. The 5.5-inch 3G device has a HD IPS screen, octa core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB storage, and 13MP camera. The rotating camera has already attracted a lawsuit threat from Oppo. Interestingly, the company’s website has the following text about its CES announcements: “Be Original. Be Polaroid. Fun and Creative Innovations Make Their Debut at the 2015 International Consumer Electronics Show.”

Asus Zenfone 2

Following the success of Asus Zenphone that was launched last year, the Taiwanese electronics firm announced the successor the ZenFone 2 it at CES this year. The 5.5 inch device has opted for an Intel processor. The device is powered by 2.3 GHz 64-bit quad-core Intel Atom Z3580 processor and 4GB of RAM. The device has a 13MP camera and features a wide f/2.0 aperture lensand a 5MP front cam with a 140-degree field of view.
