UAE mobile phone users peak at 12.9 million

More than 88,000 new users joined the UAE’s mobile phone market in August to push the total number of GSM in the second largest Arab economy to a record high of around 12.9 million, according to official data.

At that level, the UAE maintained its position as having one of the world’s highest mobile phone penetration rates, standing at 159 per cent at the end of August this year, showed the figures by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).

The report showed around 913,000 new service users joined Etisalat and Du in August, boosting the total number of subscribers to mobile phones, fixed landlines, and internet to an all time high of nearly 15.78 million at the end of the month.

The UAE, with a population of around 8.2 million, was among the first Arab countries to introduce mobile phone services more than 15 years ago.

Given its high per capita income, the second highest in the Middle East after Qatar, the UAE has recorded one of the world’s fastest growing telecommunication sectors.
