Which camera is best for you? Top 10 SLRs

For those of you who have been scouting around for the best in camera technology Tipa (Technical Image Press Association) award is something to look forward to.

Tipa has announced the winners of all products that were launched in the past 12 months and the awards were shared by Canon, Nikon and Fujifilm.

While Canon EOS 7D Mark II won the award for ‘the best Digital SLR in expert category’, Nikon D5500 bagged the award for ‘the best entry level Digital SLR’ and Nikon D810 was selected as ‘the best professional Digital SLR’.

Tipa membership comprises 28 leading photo and imaging magazines from 15 countries. Tipa award is decided following voting by member magazines who vote for the best photo and imaging products launched by the industry in the last 12 months.

The voting took place during the general assembly held on March 20 in Dubai. A total of 40 products were selected for the awards in as many categories. The awards will be presented to the winning companies in Tokyo, Japan on the June 19.

Here are the top awards:

1. Best Digital SLR Professional - Nikon D810

Nikon won the top award for ‘the best DSLR in the professional category’, thanks to its full-frame (FX) format, a 36.3MP lens with a CMOS sensor. The camera can deliver up to 5 full-resolution frames per second with enhanced noise reduction in its ISO 64-12,800 range, which is expandable to ISO 32/51,200, and broadcast quality video in Full HD.

Nikon’s Scene Recognition System with 91,000 pixel 3D Colour Matrix Meter III provides balanced exposures even under difficult lighting conditions with exposure, AF, white balance, and i-TTL flash control included in the mix.

For videographers, D810 offers an HDMI port, in-camera time lapse and interval timer, a built-in stereo microphone with a selectable voice frequency range, full-time AF, and full manual control. The camera also has dual card slots capable of handling both SD and CF memory cards. The body alone is priced at around Dh12,000.

2. Best Digital SLR Expert Canon EOS-7D Mark II

The EOS 7D Mark II is for experts who know what DSLR is capable of. The 20.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor has a weather- and dust-resistant magnesium alloy body along with dual DIGIC 6 processors. The camera features 10 frames-per-second shooting rate, a 65-point (all cross type) AF system, and a 100 per cent field of view viewfinder.

The camera has dual card slots for both SD-type and CF cards. To support Full HD video quality there is Dual Pixel CMOS AF and dedicated stereo microphone and built-in headphone jack ports. The camera body alone is priced at around Dh13,500.

3. Best Digital SLR Entry Level – Nikon D5500

Nikon D5500 is for those who are learning the tricks of photography and first-time DSLR users. The lightweight device has 24.2MP CMOS sensor and can deliver up to 5 frames per second at full resolution and Full HD video with a choice of four different frames per second rates, from 24p to 60p. ISO sensitivity range is between 100 and 25,600.

It also comes with a 3.2 inch touchscreen LCD. Using Nikon’s wireless app, users can connect the camera to a compatible smartphone or tablet wirelessly with no hot spot needed. The device has a top shutter speed is 1/4000 second. It is priced at Dh1,999.

4. Best Premium Camera - Fujifilm X100T

Fujifilm has continued to invest in the X100 series. The latest X100T has a 16.3 MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS II sensor and EXR processor. The device has a high-resolution optical Advanced Hybrid Viewfinder which also allows for what Fujifilm dubs ‘Real-time Parallax Correction’.

Other features include a top shutter speed of 1/32,000 second, seven customizable ‘Fn’ buttons, Full HD video with numerous selectable frames rates (with optical finder viewing) and built-in WiFi for transfer and remote camera operation via the company’s Camera Remote app. The device can be purchased for Dh5,000.

5. Best Design Leica T (typ 701)

This one’s for the fashion conscious. The German camera maker has built the device with a body machined from a single solid block of aluminium and hand-polished, and a design done in coordination with Audi Design. This CSC has an APS-C 16.5MP sensor and a 3.7-inch touchscreen LCD.

The device has four purpose built lenses and comes with an integrated GPS make. The free Leica App T coordinates sharing or using smartphones and tablets for remote shooting and camera control. The device is priced at around Dh9,000.

6. Best Superzoom Camera - Nikon COOLPIX P610

This is another entry level device that comes with a 60X integral NIKKOR ED glass zoom lens (equivalent: 24-1440mm). The Nikon P610 has a 16MP CMOS sensor and can deliver 7 full-resolution images per second and Full HD video while utilising Nikon’s 5-stop Dual Detect Optical VR image stabilisation.

Shooting features include filter effects and special effects, as well as a macro mode, plus time lapse video recording. The device has built-in GPS with built-in WiFi and NFC connectivity. It is priced at around Dh1,600.

7. Best Photo/Video Camera Expert Panasonic LUMIX DMC LX100

The Panasonic Lumix LX100 is for those who want both a quality still and video camera. It has a 12.8MP 4/3-inch High-Sensitivity MOS sensor, and the ability to record 4K video.

The device has an integral 24-75mm (equivalent) f/1.7-2.8 Leica DC Vario-Summilux lens and numerous control and exposure dials that allow for complete control over still imaging, including the ability to deliver 11 frames per second full-resolution images.

It can also record Full HD 1920 x 1080 AVCHD Progressive or MP4 at 60p, or 4K 3840 x 2160 at 30 fps. Panasonic has proposed what they dub ‘4K Photo’, grabbing an 8MB still image from the 4K video footage. Other features include WiFi and NFC connectivity and a RAW+JPEG format choice. It is priced at around Dh3,100.

8. Best Rugged Camera Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FT6 (TS6)

It’s Panasonic again and this time it is for its rugged cameras. The device can handle underwater depths to 43 feet (13 metres) and shoot at temperatures as low as -10C. The camera has a 16.1MP MOS sensor and an integral 4.6X (28-128mm equivalent) Leica DC Vario-Elmar zoom.

ISO range is 100-3200 with a push to 6400 available in certain modes. It can record Full HD and shoot at 10 frames per second (7 frame burst). There are 14 Creative and 16 Scene modes, plus WiFi and NFC compatibility. It is priced at around Dh1,500.

9. Best ActionCam Ricoh WG-M1

The Ricoh WG-M1 is an action cam that can go waterproof to 32 feet (9.75 metres) without an additional protective housing. The device has a 14MP sensor, large control buttons and a 1.5-inch (3.8cm) LCD monitor.

It can record Full HD movies and deliver 10 frames-per-second high-speed shooting through its ultra-wide-angle lens. The camera comes with a carabineer-equipped strap for carrying and a WG adhesive mount to help attach the camera to different surfaces. It is priced at around Dh1,500.

10. Best CSC Professional - Samsung NX1

Samsung has been a leader in mirror less cameras and the NX1 has enough evidence for it. The device has a 28.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and a homemade DRIMe V processor that drives both 4K video and a full-resolution still image shooting rate of 15 frames per second. The camera has an ISO range of 100-25,600 and a new hybrid AF system.

It has a 3-inch 1036-K-dot AMOLED tilting touch-screen monitor as well as a high resolution 2360K-dot XGA OLED EVF. There are a host of video options that the NX1 supports DCI 4K – 4096 x 2160 at 24P and UHD 4K – 3840 x 2160 at 24P/30P.  Also, NX1 can capture up to 120fps at Full HD. Connectivity is via WiFi, NFC and Bluetooth, as well as USB 3.0. The body alone is priced at around Dh4,500.
