Will next iPhone include Sapphire-like glass?

Soon smartphones including the next edition of the iPhone could come out with a screen that’s as powerful as the Sapphire glass, which the company wanted to instal in the iPhone 6.

Corning Incorporated, which has been producing the Gorilla Glass for all the iPhone models and then to various smartphone manufactures, has announced that it is working towards making a glass that is as strong as Sapphire, both in terms of scratch resistance and durability.

Speaking at the company’s annual investor meeting in New York City, Wendell P. Weeks, Corning Incorporated’s CEO and president said, the company is in the process of developing new scratch-resistance capabilities for cover glass.

James P. Clappin, president of Corning Glass Technologies said, “We have developed a new product that will provide sapphire-like scratch resistance while maintaining the legendary toughness and break resistance of Gorilla Glass.”

“Since it was introduced in 2007, Corning Gorilla Glass has defined innovation in the cover glass market,” he added.

Corning’s continued advancements in cover glass technologies include Gorilla Glass 4 as well as glass material enhancements for improved scratch-resistance, 3D shaping, and several other surface capabilities.

CNET in its latest report adds that the new project has been named as Project Phire.

It was greatly rumored that Apple would incorporate Sapphire Glass, which is twice as hard as ordinary glass and as hard as a diamond and considered to be scratch resistant, into the iPhone 6.

But then came the dispute with GT Advanced Technologies, which accused of leading it to bankruptcy.

Meanwhile, Apple decided to continue with the much cheaper Corning’s Gorilla Glass for its latest models while the latter went to town with the fact that its Gorilla Glass 4 is one of its toughest glasses ever.
