Colombo: A schoolgirl escaped imminent death when the saree she used to hang herself gave way.
The 17-year-old, who is now recuperating in hospital, attempted to take her own life after being let down by her boyfriend, reported ‘Mawbima’.
The Grade 11 student, who claims to have been in a relationship with a 22-year-old boy for the last eight months, wanted to celebrate her birthday with him on July 5.
They decided to meet-up, however, when he did not turn up at the promised time, she returned home and hanged herself using a saree.
The saree tore and she fell down. It was only upon hearing the fall, that her mom learnt about her attempt at suicide.
She rushed her to hospital.
Investigations continue.
