Two men are accused of stealing $100,000 (Dh360,000), in a case involving the sale of gold.
The two accused, one of whom is a fugitive, also allegedly threw white powder on the faces of the two Emiratis they stole the money from, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.
MAA, 38, a Sudanese, and his absconding partner-in-crime are accused of assaulting one of the victims, Hussain Ibrahim, who was holding the envelope with the cash, while the four were in a car.
According to the testimony of Ibrahim, 29 on July 4 he received a phone call from one of the accused stating that they had gold to sell, with proper documentation.
“The caller said I would benefit from reselling them for a higher price. When I asked why he was not selling it in the gold market instead, he said he would not get a good price because he is not an Emirati. He kept on calling and in the end, it was agreed to buy 2250kg of gold for US$100,000. I withdrew US$50,000 from my personal account and another businessman Ahmad Abdullah, who agreed to buy the gold with me, withdrew the other US$50,000,” Ibrahim said.
According to the testimony, on July 11 the accused met the victim in his house in Abu Dhabi.
The two showed a sample of the gold but when asked for the invoices, said they were with a third person and who would be met later in Dubai.
Ibrahim continued, “The next day MAH called and said he is waiting for us in Dubai with the invoices are with him. At 2.45 we met him behind Al Bustan Centre.
“The two accused, who arrived by taxi sat in our car and asked us to drive for security sake because the gold with them. As we were driving they asked to see the money. We showed them the money. They then asked use to drive back to the meeting point. Upon reaching there, they sprayed a white powder on our faces and snatched the envelop after beating me. As they ran away, we found their mobile phones on the street. We took them and called the police,” he testified.
The second victim Ahmad Abdullah, 33, corroborated the testimony.
Corporal Yousef Abdullah testified that from the mobiles police they were able to identify the two accused and found out that one was still in the country buy the other had fled.
