3 on trial for attempting to smuggle drugs in fridge

Three Iranians allegedly attempted smuggling about 157kgs of methamphetamine to Thailand in a refrigerator.

BFI, 30, jobless; MRM, 35, visitor; RAT, 40 sailor; and RBA, 24, sailor are standing trial in Dubai Criminal Court. RBA is also accused of possessing opium for personal use.

The incident came to light when Dubai Police received a tip off that BFI would be receiving a large quantity of drugs at Dubai Marina.

After checking the authenticity of the information and obtaining permission to arrest him, cops waited at the location at 11.30pm on February 9.

There, as expected, cops saw BFI waiting in a car. A few minutes later a man [RBA] handed him over 10 boxes wrapped in black, which he inside the car that he put in the car, testified Major Ayoub Hassan.

He then proceeded to Port Saeed area. At about 12.15am he returned with another person and drove to the Springs area and stopped in front of a villa.

There the policemen arrested the two and confiscated the boxes, which contained methamphetamine.

The cops later raided their residence and found refrigerators with cavities inside. The accused confessed to making holes in fridges in order to smuggle the drugs to Thailand.

BFI confessed to receiving the drugs from RBA, who in turn told that he got the substance from Saeed, an Iranian. Cops confiscated drugs from RBA’s yacht. The drugs were for his personal use, he confessed.

The court is adjourned until October 14.
