Four jobless Bangladeshis who kidnapped two workers of a gold dealing company from Dubai to Sharjah and robbed Dh1.09 million that they were carrying in a school bag in Sabkha area, were sentenced to three years in prison.

The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance also ordered the deportation of the four convicts after serving their jail term.

According to the records, NH, 31, a Bangladeshi owner of a building cleaning company, told police that he deals in gold with a businessman who lives in Bangladesh (identified as MA).

“On January 14 at around 9pm, I handed over Dh1.09 million to two workers, MR and MH, and asked them to hand over the amount to a gold dealer called Arshad and to get from him 9kg of gold. This was in my office in Sabkha. The two left the office and headed to Arshad’s place.

“Two hours after they left, I received a call from the two who told me that they had been kidnapped and robbed, so I lodged a complaint with Naif police station,” he told investigators.

The first victim told investigators that the money was in a school bag.

“My friend was carrying the school bag. While we were crossing the street, four men stopped us, claimed to be CID and presented a card. They asked us for our IDs.

“While my friend was taking out the ID, one of the men snatched the bag and opened it. When he saw the money, the men asked us to accompany them to their car which was a civilian vehicle and not a police patrol. They claimed that they will check our identity at the police station,” MR, one of the victims told prosecutors.

“After we got into their car, they covered our faces and tied our hands behind our backs and drove for about 50 minutes.

“They stopped in a sandy area where they pushed us out of the car and sped away after stealing our mobiles. We managed to untie our hands and, with the help of pedestrians, we called the police,” MR told investigators.

The other victim, MH, 29, repeated corroborative testimony.

Police arrested JM, 19, in Umm Al Quwain and confiscated more than Dh170,000 from him.

JM admitted that he had decided with four others to target people who carry bags in the Naif area and rented a car for that purpose.

“When we have spotted two pedestrian pulling a school bag, we thought they were carrying money and we stopped them, claiming to be CID,” confessed JM.

“After asking them to enter our car, claiming that we will check on them, we covered their faces and drove to Sharjah and we pushed them out of the car near Al Falah Camp and proceeded to Ajman where we divided the amount amongst us,” JM confessed.

Police later arrested MY, 18, and confiscated Dh690,000 from him, and ON, 23, who had Dh99,800. The two were arrested in Ajman. The fourth accused, YA, 19, was arrested in Sharjah and police confiscated Dh97,800 from him.

The two victims recognised the accused when shown to them via identification parades.
