7,000 'wanted' caught by Dubai cops in 8 months

Dubai police arrested nearly 7,000 people wanted in criminal cases in the first eight months of 2014 and recovered around Dh1.7 billion stolen or extorted by those criminals, the emirate’s assistant police chief was quoted on Thursday as saying.

Major General Khalil Al Mansouri said those arrested included 130 wanted internationally for various crimes while the rest were seized in the emirate.

He told local newspapers that the high number of those arrested in the emirate was a result of a new plan introduced by the police involving deployment of more specialized cops in vulnerable areas including Al Muraqabat, Rashidiya and Al Qusais.

He said he expected the total number of arrested criminals in the emirate to surpass last year’s 9,636 persons as a result of better performance in the new plan.

“A large number of those arrested locally were involved in such crimes as dud cheques and breach of trust,” he said.

Another police official said 29 of the internationally-wanted persons have been expatriated in line with known police procedures enforced in most countries.

“We are waiting to receive the files of the rest before we hand them over…most of those wanted internationally are convicted for murder, drug smuggling, human trade and other serious cases,” said Colonel Salim Al Rumaithi, deputy director of the CID department.
