Bicycle carton used to smuggle stolen jewellery

A Georgian burglar was arrested while attempting to smuggle out in a bicycle carton gold jewellery worth about Dh320,000 that he had allegedly stolen with other two accomplices, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

AG, 34, visitor, is accused of breaking into the house of MLD on June 6 and stealing from it 55 bullions of gold worth Dh43,000, 28 bracelets of Dh74,000, 12 rings of Dh13,000, four necklaces of Dh13,000, 13 chains of Dh7,500, three rings of Dh2,000 value and four sets worth Dh172,000.

Police officer Hussain Murad testified that the accused was arrested while he was attempting to leave the country with the jewellerey hidden in a bicycle carton.

He confessed to committing a number of thefts with two accomplices who fled the country. He admitted to robbing the flat in which MLD lived. He confessed that they used to rent cars and observe some areas to find house which can be burgled safely. They used to knock on doors of flats to ensure that nobody is in.

 They did that in the case of MLD’s flat and as no one was in, they broke into the flat and stole the jewellery from the bedroom.

The accused said his accomplices had taken part of the stolen jewellery to Georgia. They sold the jewellery there and sent him $900 via a money exchange company.

The accused confessed to burgling another flat in the same building in Mankhool area on the same night.

The court adjourned the case to November 26 for verdict.
