Claiming to be Dubai Municipality staffers, two Arabs allegedly conned a company into selling them 20 iPads against a forged purchase order and cheque, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

SL, 34, director of the company, complained to the police that in 2011, AH, claiming to be a Dubai Municipality employee, called him and expressed interest in buying 20 iPads.

“After negotiating the price, he sent me by fax a purchase order which carried the municipality’s emblem and told me that a Dubai Municipality employee will come to collect the iPads and hand over the cheque  to me.

“The man came and collected the iPads and handed me a cheque of Dh78,000. I was informed by the bank that the cheque was forged. Checking with the municipality about Ahmad H, I was told that they do not have an employee with such a name. When I sent them the purchase order and the cheque, I was told both were forged,” SL, Nepali, told the police.

Police arrested KS, 27, Yemeni, the one who collected the iPads and handed over the forged cheque to SL. His partner AI, 43, was also arrested.

The Court will reconvene on March 9.
