A 30-year old customs inspector allegedly stole 200 Tramadol tablets that were to be destroyed, valued at between Dh3,000 to 4,000, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

WMA is also accused of unlawfully possessing controlled drugs.

According to records, the accused was assigned to prepare 91m Tramadol tablets that had been confiscated by Dubai Customs to be destroyed.

MMA, Director, Dubai Customs, testified that he asked the director of the relevant department  to assign an employee to count the quantity before destroying them.

“The accused was assigned by the director and assisted by Asian cleaners to count and prepare the tablets under my supervision.

“After about an hour I gave them a break and during the break I noticed the accused leaving the place and going to drink water and noticed that he was hiding something in his boots.

“I immediately asked him to stop and checking his boot I found tablets. He resisted taking off the other pair, so he was taken to the toilet where with the help of other employees including his director he was forced to take it off. There were more tablets, totalling 200. The administration was informed and legal action was taken against the accused,” testified MMA.

Other employees who were also supervising the store with MMA and the cleaners repeated similar testimonies.

The department supplied the Prosecution with a CD that carried a recording of the accused while he was being caught and searched by the employees.

The court will reconvene to hear the case today.
