Dh10m counterfeit mobiles seized in Dubai

The intellectual property protection section of Dubai’s Economic Development Department (DED) on Monday seized 47,000 counterfeit mobile phones, 99,000 phone chargers and batteries and 110,000 mobile covers worth Dh10 million.

DED said the seizures were made in a hotel apartment thought to be a repackaging centre.

The department told the Arabic daily newspaper Emarat Al Youm that it was the first time that counterfeit goods were seized from a hotel. Representatives of the trademark owners were present.

Ibrahim Behzad, director of the Intellectual Property Rights Department, said a hotel seems to have been chosen to conceal commercial fraud from regulators.

Behzad urged the public to report existence of counterfeit goods to the authorities.
