An Emirati driver whose Land Cruiser four-wheel car suffered from a total system failure while travelling at 120 kph intends to sue the vehicle’s agents while authorities said the model could be withdrawn from the market.

Abdullah Al Mulla, 25, was on his way to Ras Al Khaimah on August 11 when his 2009 Land Cruiser’s brakes and accelerator systems failed, triggering police alert before he brought the vehicle to a halt by using the hand brakes.

Mulla told the Arabic language daily Emarat Alyoum that his car suffered from a complete failure and that he could not use its gear and other systems.

“I tried to use all the electronic systems in the car to stop it but all of them did not work…I will sue Al Futaim agents for this failure which put my life in danger so this will not happen again with other drivers,” he said.

The paper said the Ministry of Economy has reacted quickly by requesting a report on the incident from the Ministry of Interior.

It quoted Hashim Al Nuaimi, consumer protection director, as saying the Ministry had already contacted Al Futaim for further information.

“We want to know the real reason for this serious failure in the car systems…in case it is proved there are factory defects in this model, the agent will be asked to withdraw all those cars from the market for repair and maintenance.”
