Drunk driver fined Dh10,000; 80 lashes

A court in Ajman fined an Arab man Dh1,000 and ordered him lashed 80 times after he was found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police arrested the man after he banged into a bicycle while driving in the northern emirate, resulting in the injury of the cyclist who was taken to hospital.

The prosecutor charged him of driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving and trying to run away from the traffic police.

Newspapers said the unnamed defendant pleaded guilty in court but asked for mercy.
