A Fujairah appeals court fined a motorist Dh14,000 and ordered the suspension of his driving licence for six months after he was found guilty of driving his car under the influence of alcohol on the eastern emirate’s roads.

A court had earlier fined the driver Dh22,000, prompting him to appeal the sentence, the semi-official daily Al Ittihad said.

It did not identify the defendant but said he was caught by police driving in a dangerous way and that tests showed he was drunk.

Two teens acquitted of drug charges

An appeals court in Fujairah acquitted two teen age boys of charges of taking drugs, overturning a previous court sentence involving 10 years in prison for the Emirati and one year for an Arab, the press reported on Wednesday.

The court of first instance had also fined the Emirati defendant Dh70,000 and ordered the deportation of the Arab.

During the appeals trial, the defence lawyer demanded the acquittal of the two on the grounds they are teenagers and they had no criminal intention to take drugs.

He also argued that the police statements in court were contradictory.

“The appeals court acquitted the two of all charges and ordered their release,” the Arabic language daily Al Khaleej said.
