A Canadian national allegedly offered a bribe of US$1,000 to a UAE policeman for releasing him, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

On May 23, KA, over 18 years old, and his friend MH were speaking loudly and violating order and discipline in the street. Two policemen who were walking in the area stopped them and asked for their IDs.

“The two refused to present their ID cards.  They were behaving abnormally and smelt of alcohol,” policeman Abdulrahman Abdullah told investigators.

The cops asked for a police car to take the two to the station.

While waiting for the police car, KA offered US$1,000 to one of the two policemen as bribe when he was putting on handcuffs.

KA kept silent when confronted with the bribe attempt

However, the two accused claimed that the two policemen had robbed them of US$2,000 while searching them.

Later, the accused admitted to offering money as bribe to the policeman Abdulrahman.

The court will give its sentence on September 14.
