Dubai cabbie flees with passenger's luggage

A Pakistani taxi driver who was asked by a passenger to wait for her until she bought some things from a supermarket, allegedly exploited the situation and drove off with her luggage in the car, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

On October 28, at around 3pm, AA, 39, Uzbek national, sales executive, took a taxi from the Royal Falcon Hotel. She put a bag containing clothes and shoes in the trunk of the taxi and placed her laptop on the back seat next to her.

“I asked him to drive to a supermarket to buy some things. When we reached there, I asked him to wait for me for a couple of minutes. When I got off the car, I noted the number on the side of the car and entered the supermarket. After about five minutes I returned but did not find the taxi, so I called the police,” AA told investigators.

Police reached WK, 26, Pakistani, who was the driver of the taxi at the time when the woman used it. Searching his accommodation, police found the victim’s mobile phone.

WK admitted that he had handed over the other things of the victim to his friend MZ. Police searched MZ’s accommodation and confiscated the bag of clothes and  shoes and other things of the victim.MZ, 33, admitted that he knew that the things were stolen.

The Court will give its sentence on January 29.
