A 43-year-old store keeper, DSL, allegedly stole nine cheques of his employer EME and used four of them for renting a flat, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

DSL used four cheques for renting a flat in Hor Al Anz area from Al Khaja Real Estate. He presented necessary documents to prove that he works for the company and claimed that his employer has issued him the cheques to help him pay his house rent.

Al Khaja Real Estate finalised the lease and gave him the key of the flat. Al Khaja submitted the first cheque to RAK Bank. The bank’s official suspected the signature on the cheque so he called the company.

BMT, 49, Indian, commercial manager at EME, testified that he rushed to the bank and checked the cheque. He also checked with Al Khaja Real Estate which had accepted the cheque against leasing a house to DSL.

“I notified the manager who also was unaware about the four cheques that he had not signed on. Company officials questioned DSL who confessed to stealing nine cheques,” he testified.

The employer asked the bank to block the remaining cheques and reported the crime to the police.

The court adjourned the case to June 10.
