Employers in court over maid torture in RAK

An Arab couple from a Gulf country could be jailed for nearly a year and fined Dh10,000 after they were charged of severely torturing their Asian housemaid in Ras Al Khaimah, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Doctors at a RAK hospital said the maid suffered from massive bruises on her chest, hands and legs after she was beaten up by her employers.

A court in the emirate opened hearings into the case on Monday after the prosecution presented evidence that the 38-year-old man, identified as AT, and his wife, 30, tortured and beat up their maid.

In its report, Emirat Alyoum Arabic language daily said the couple could face a maximum one year in jail and a Dh10,000 fine if convicted.
