Two engineers allegedly stole fibre optic cables worth more than Dh235,000 and sold it to a third person for Dh30,000, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

OAM, 32, and SAS, 29, Indians, are accused of exploiting their positions  in ‘du’ company and stealing fibre optic cables used in telecommunication worth  Dh235,543.

DBJ, 33, Indian, sales manager, is accused of possessing the stolen cable and buying them for Dh30,000 which is far less than their market price with knowledge of the source of the cable.

Chief Prosecutor Ismaeel Ali asked the court to implement stiff penalties against the accused.

The first accused confessed that he has been working for du since five years and earns Dh16,000 monthly salary. Eight months ago, he agreed with the second accused to steal fibre optic cables and sell them to the third accused.  They used to ask for more cables than needed to sell the surplus to the third accused.

The second accused repeated the same testimony and the two were arrested on January 5, the same day they sold cables to the third accused.

The third accused, who works for a network technology company, confessed that he bought cables from the two accused employees of du with the knowledge that they steal them so he did not ask them to show purchase bills.

AA, vice-head of du’s government relations department, testified that the company received a tip off about OAM who offered fibre optic cables on his personal website.

“We investigated  and we found that the cables offered for sale belonged to du. We informed police about our suspicions and supplied them with all needed information,” he testified.

Police reached the buyer, trapped the other two and arrested them.

The court will reconvene on October 3.
