A court in the eastern oasis town of Al Ain sentenced an Arab man to death after he was convicted of murdering his ex-fiance and burying her body in the heart of the desert, newspapers reported on Tuesday.

The court issued its sentence against the 25-year-old man after the relatives of the 21-year-old victim, Eman, insisted on his death and rejected his family’s efforts to grant him a pardon in return for blood money.

“The defendant was not present in court when the judge issued the sentence as per his request…the victim’s brother burst into crying when the verdict was announced,” the semi- official daily ‘Al Ittihad’ said.

The defendant, identified only as TG, had denied he was involved in the murder of the girl but her relatives swore in court “50 times” that her ex-fiancée was behind her death.

Eman was reported missing in June and police investigation showed her ex-fiancée was the killer. The prosecution told court the man had confessed to police that he took Eman to a desert area, killed her and buried her there.

“Eman’s father and other relatives had sworn in court 50 times that they are convinced Eman’s ex-fiancée murdered her because he had tried many times to return to her but was rebuffed…they told court they insist on his death under Sharia law.”
