A fake property owner who used forged documents to swindle Dh31,000 out of a tenant was sentenced to a year and a half in jail followed by deportation.

MAH, 28, Syrian, forged a residency stamp on a passport that carried another person’s name and forged a flat property ownership certificate with which he conned a tenant.

The victim HS, 34, Lebanese manager, testified that while his wife was looking for a flat to let on dubizzle.com, she found an ad of a flat in Discovery Gardens for Dh25,000.

“I called the given mobile number and met the landlord who claimed his name was “Mohammed Al Shahiri” and gave him my wife’s passport photocopy, signed the contract and paid him Dh28,000 as the rent and Dh3,000 as deposit. I got a receipt for the payment. He also handed me an ownership certificate and a passport photocopy.

“Three days later, an Egyptian knocked at the door and asked me if I wish to renew my contract. I told him that I have just renewed the rent contract for the flat and showed him the documents. I called MAH and he confessed that he had falsely claimed ownership of the flat as he needed money and sought forgiveness,” he testified.

MAH confessed before the police that he found a passport photocopy of a Syrian on the Internet. He falsified his passport photocopy by placing his picture and the residency visa stamp and made it in the same name as of the original holder.

Dubai Lands Department reported that the ownership certificate’s copy was forged. The DNRD also reported that the visa stamp was forged.
