Gold worth Dh320,000 hidden in bicycle
In a novel way of smuggling gold, a Georgian attempted to flee with ornaments worth about Dh320,000 in bicycle parts.
He was nabbed at Dubai airport, after being caught moving suspiciously and because he had a large luggage.
The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced the 34-year-old accused to three years in jail. He will be deported after serving his term.
He was found guilty of breaking into a house on June 6 and stealing 55 bullions worth Dh43,000.
He is also accused of stealing 28 bracelets worth Dh74,000 value; 12 rings valued at Dh13,000; four necklaces worth Dh13,000 value; 13 chains costing Dh7,500; three rings worth Dh2,000 and 4 other jewellery sets of Dh172,000.
Police officer Hussain Murad testified in court that the accused was arrested while he was attempting to leave the country with the jewellery hidden in a huge carton comprising cycle parts.
The gold was stuffed inside tyres and metal tubes of the bicycle.
Explaining the modus operandi, he told the court that he along with two others took a car on rent and roamed the target area to study which houses were locked.
Then once they zeroed in on the apartment, they knocked at the door to ensure nobody was inside. After making sure nobody was inside, they broke
in through the bedroom and stole gold jewellery.
He admitted to selling some of the loot and sending the $900 to Georgia, via a money exchange.
He also confessed to breaking into another home in Al Mankhool area.
