Health inspector accused of taking bribe

A health inspector from another Gulf country is on trial in Abu Dhabi on charges of taking bribe from a local company so he will not penalise it for hygienic offences, a newspaper reported on Monday.

The unnamed inspector at a local government department was on a routine visit to the company when he discovered violations, ‘Al Khaleej’ Arabic language daily said.

Instead of fining the firm, he asked for Dh3,000 in return for not reporting its violations, an offer which the company quickly accepted.

“He returned to the company in the evening and received the money. On the next day, the company reported him to his department,” the paper said.

It said the judge on Sunday adjourned hearings to May 11.
