The Dubai Criminal Court awarded a 34-year-old Sri Lankan maid six months in jail after she was found guilty of stealing jewellery and other items worth about Dh300,000 from her employer.

The maid, LT, was also ordered deportation after serving the jail term.

School teacher BAA, 42, testified that LT had been working in her house as a maid for the past 12 years and she realised it after Dh4,000 went missing on September 10.

“Our neighbour’s maid came to us and asked the accused to help her send some stuff back home; she put some stuff in a bag. So I suspected the whole matter and checked the stuff in the bag and found that the missed amount in addition to some of my clothes and that of my children were in the bag. I also found with her the keys of the jewellery box and my daughter’s room where I kept the box. She confessed stealing my jewellery and handed me over Dh2,500 and a golden bracelet,” the teacher testified.
