A Sri Lankan maid stole jewellery worth Dh55,000 from her employer and fled his house, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

PJ, 43, Indian businessman, and his wife had left for work on February 12 last year. He later called the housemaid to check on his children.

“I called my house number several times but the housemaid did not answer. Later my son replied and told me that she is not in the house. I rushed to my house and checked our belongings and my wife’s jewellery. When I found out that the maid had stolen the jewellery, I notified the police,” PJ told investigators.

Four days later, police spotted the maid in Dubai’s Al Badaa area. She was carrying luggage and seemed to be trying to leave the UAE.

“Searching her bags, we confiscated the gold jewellery belonging to her sponsor,” testified police officer Mohammed Hassan.

The Court will give its sentence on March 10.
