Man gets 5 years for robbery, assault

A criminal court in Ras Al Khaimah sentenced an Asian man to five years in prison and ordered his deportation from the UAE after he was convicted of stealing a house and assaulting an old Emirati woman who tried to stop him.

Police seized the man after selling a mobile phone which he had stolen from the house during a night raid.

The man first claimed the phone belonged to his friend but confessed later it was among the items he burgled from the house.

The court was told that the defendant sneaked into the house while most family members, except the mother, were out.

When she tried to stop him, he assaulted her and pushed her down on the floor before stealing her mobile.
