A court in Abu Dhabi championed the case of a woman and divorced her from her Emirati husband because of his persistence abuse of her while it also ordered him to pay almost two thirds of his salary to her and three children.

The unnamed man had filed a suit asking court to force his wife to return home but she countered by demanding a divorce, citing mistreatment of her and their three children. A court of first instance supported the woman and divorced her but did not meet all her demands for massive damages.

The woman had demanded Dh200,000 per year for housing, Dh5,000 per month for children and other damages. She also asked court to force her ex-husband to pay back Dh120,000 he had borrowed from her.

The sentence prompted the husband to resort to the appeals court, which again supported the wife. He then appealed with the court of cassation, which upheld the divorce and ruled that he must pay her monthly alimony.

According to Emirat Alyoum Arabic language daily, the court ordered the man to pay Dh8,000 in monthly rent for his ex-wife , Dh3,000 alimony for the children and Dh500 for care of the children.

“It should be noted that the man’s salary is around Dh18,000 a month, of which he pays Dh11,800 monthly instalments to the bank from which he had borrowed nearly Dh1.3 million,” the paper said.
