Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance today (Thursday) awarded death sentence to an Indian who suffocated his compatriot to death for over Dh8,500 debt issue.

The man had put his compatriot’s body in a carton left in the street.

According to the Court records, police received information on May 23, about a body found in a big carton in Fareej Al Marrar area.

A watchman saw a large carton at around 10pm left in front of his building.

“I thought it belongs to someone who would come and pick it up, but when I saw the carton was still there the next day, I went to check it. As I removed the tape I was shocked to see a dead man in the cartoon. I immediately informed Dubai Police,” said the watchman.

Police rushed to the scene and identified that the dead is an Indian national by his appearance because he was not carrying any ID document.

Forensic doctor who was also rushed to the scene reported that the victim was either suffocated or hanged.

Within hours, police managed to identify the culprit, NS, 28, jobless, who was involved in criminal activities. The victim’s finger prints and camera footage helped identify the killer.

Police arrested NS in Gold Souq and when confronted with the information police have, NS denied any link with the victim.

Investigators were also supplied with the identities of the people whose finger prints were found on the carton; so four more people – GA, MA, MJ and KK – were questioned by the police.

GA admitted that he had carried the carton with another person upon the request of an Indian.

“On May 22, I was stopped by an Indian who was wearing a blue top and jeans in Naif area and asked me to carry the carton from his flat to Eyal Nasser area. I agreed to do for Dh50. He claimed that he had some personal stuff in the carton. I shifted the cartoon on a trolley with the help of another person and left it in Fareej Al Marrar near a shop upon his request. He paid me Dh50,” testified the porter.

Police also arrested MA and MJ who gave the same descriptions of the man who had asked them to transport the carton.

“We were stopped by a man who said that he wants us to carry his carton which he claimed contain glass and other stuff. We agreed with to do that for Dh25.

“A third person, MZ, came along and helped us carry the carton on to a trolley. When I reached the place he wants us to take carton to, he paid me Dh25,” testified MA assuring that they can identify the man who asked them to do the service denying knowing that the carton contained a dead body.

Police checked the camera footage of a hotel and saw the porter transporting the carton which contained the body. Police identified NS also through camera footage asking port to shift his carton to the desire place.

When police confronted NS with the facts it had collected, he admitted committing the murder of his compatriot.

“I had lent him Dh8,500 in three installments and whenever I asked him to pay me back the money he said he cannot as he does not have the money. On May 22, I received a call from him saying that he wants to come to my place to discuss the payment. Ten minutes later he arrived to the flat. There was no anyone else in the flat and we started talking about the payment. Soon our arguments and then we started fighting. He pushed me to the floor; then I grabbed a rope nearby and pushed him to the floor. I sat on his chest and tightened the rope rope around his neck. I pulled it tight until blood came from his nose and fluids from his month and his body turned cold,” NS said.

“Then I thought of getting rid of the body. I went down and bought a big box for Dh12 and took it to the flat. I put the body in the carton and closed it with a tape after taking out his mobile and wallet. I threw the rope and his  and the wallet and mobile in a garbage bin and then pushed the carton out of the flat.

“I went down and in search of people to carry the box. I assigned two men to transport it to Eyal Nasser area. Then I assigned other two men to transport the carton to Fareej Al Marrar area where I left on the following day,” NS told police after admitting his crime.

NS was prosecuted for premeditated murder.
