Minors to be prosecuted if caught with knife twice

Dubai’s police have warned parents that their teenage boys could be prosecuted if they are caught having a knife for the second time as part of a crackdown on such a phenomenon following a series of accidents in the emirate.

“Police will take severe measures against any minor holding a knife, a dagger or any other sharp object,” said Lt Colonel Ahmed Humaid Al Marri, director of criminal research at Dubai’s criminal investigation department.

He said police have intensified their patrols inside residential areas which have been a scene for accidents and concentrations by knife-wielding young men within a crackdown on such practices in the emirate.

“Any minor caught possessing a knife or another sharp object will have his father summoned to write a statement to make sure his son will not repeat this offence,” he said in a lecture at Al Nasr club.

“In case this boy is caught for the second time with a knife, then he will be referred to court,” he added, according to Alittihad newspaper.

Marri said the family can play a major role in curbing delinquency by their sons, blaming domestic disputes and absence of proper family control for the surge in such malpractices. “The surge in movies which promote violence in various media channels, including internet, is another key cause of such problems.”
