One year jail for Asian who beat up old Emirati

A court in Dibba, Fujeirah, sentenced an Asian man to one year in prison and ordered his deportation from the UAE after he was convicted of beating and torturing an old Emirati man, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

The court also fined the man Dh5,000 and said it issued the sentenced after finding the defendant guilty of endangering human life by savagely beating up the old man.

A YouTube film showing the domestic worker slapping and lashing the defenseless old man with a stick hit headlines in April and sent shock waves across the UAE.

The worker was brought early this year by Ali Al Dahouri’s son to look after his aging father. His cruelty and savagery was exposed after the son installed a tiny camera to verify his father’s repeated complaints about the worker.

Emirat Alyoum daily quoted the old man’s grandson Mohammed Ali as saying they would appeal for a tougher sentence. “What this worker did is very savage and cruel and he deserves a more severe punishment,” he said.
