The Dubai Criminal Court heard the case of police corporal who allegedly issued a traffic fine ticket against a truck driver for not keeping to the lane and then asked him for a bribe of Dh2,000 to cancel the fine and avoid impoundment of the vehicle.

HKM, 25, Pakistani, truck driver, testified that at around 4.30pm he was driving on Emirates Road. “A Nissan patrol flashed me. I stopped and he stopped behind. The driver who was wearing a T-shirt and jeans issued me a traffic fine ticket after presenting his military ID card.

“He told me that I should either pay Dh2,000 or the vehicle would be impounded in the Jebel Ali police  station. “I asked him for time since I only had Dh500 with me. He refused and asked me to accompany him to Jebel Ali Police station.

“I called my employer who came to the police station where we found out that what the policeman is doing is illegal. He then asked us to leave the police station after throwing the ticket he had issued in the dust bin. He had not fed it into the traffic fines system,” he testified.

HKR, 25, Afghani partner, testified that the policeman told him that the value of the fine is Dh50,000 and impoundment of the vehicle, but he would cancel the fine if he was paid Dh2,000.

“I went to the police station and confronted the policeman, telling him that what he is asking for is illegal. He put an ‘X’ sign on the ticket and we found out that he had not entered it in the system,” he testified.

The court will reconvene on July 25.
