The 33-year-old Indian farmer, who told a Dubai court that he had brought poppy seeds to use as a spice in cooking, received four years in jail and ordered to be deported after serving his term.

BS, who holds a farmer visa, was presented before the judge on accusation of possessing 102.49 grammes of poppy seeds.

“I did not smuggle drugs, we use poppy seeds in cooking,” he told the jury when appeared before the court.

According to the records, BS was arrested upon his arrival at Dubai International Airport and was found possessing 102.49 grammes of poppy seeds.

Inspector Sameera Ismael suspected the passenger who looked worried.

“On searching his luggage, I found a sack containing poppy seeds that can be germinated. When he was questioned, he admitted bringing with him poppy seeds, so he was referred to the Anti-Narcotics Department,” testified the inspector.
