An Indian sales executive is standing trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance on charges of bribing a public official.

According to prosecutors, the 41-year-old accused, JS, offered Dh2,500 as bribe to an official at Dubai Culture to win a tender for his printing house.

The Emirati official testified in court that she first met the accused when his company had won a tender to print pamphlets during Ramadan. She added that he had offered to pay her a “commission” if she facilitated him to win more future orders. “When I asked him what commission meant, he said it was kickback,” she testified.

The official told the court that at the point, she alerted her senior who informed cops. She was then asked to co-ordinate with the suspect on email.

“He mailed me his offer and requested me to take what I want from that,” she claimed.

He then entered a third bid and offered the same official Dh2,500 as bribe, according to police reports.

Meanwhile, the suspect pleaded not guilty. He testified in court that it was the official who asked him to pay the money for help and so he did it.

The trial continues.
