The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance has sentenced a 47-year-old prisoner to an additional three months in jail for setting fire to his pillow with a lighter.

He was protesting against being kept alone in a jail cell and also for not being given a blanket.

ATS was also ordered to pay a fine of Dh100 for the public property he destroyed including Dh15 for the pillow.

Policeman Mohammed Abdul Rahman testified that on April 23 at around 3.30pm while was on duty in the Central Jail checking inmates’ wards, he noticed smoke coming out from individual cell number 8.

“I rushed there and asked the accused why he did that. He replied that he was not supplied with a blanket and that he was put in a solitary cell. He also threatened to commit suicide if he was not
taken out of the solitary cell. Policemen were rushed to extinguish the fire,” he testified.

On May 5, the accused allegedly set fire to the blanket in the individual cell and posed a threat to the lives of other inmates and policemen.

Police reported another incident to the prosecution which filed another case against him.

“Checking the source of the alarm, I found fire coming out from the cell of ATS and with the help of my colleagues we put out the fire,” he testified.
